Global Industry Structures, Functions and Issues (20 credits)

This module will get you to grips with essential elements and challenges within the global music industry. By exploring current and emerging structures, processes, and trends from an international perspective, you will be equipped to identify opportunities for your activities worldwide.

Delving into broader contextual issues within the contemporary music industry, you’ll project into the future, analysing and suggesting solutions for issues such as gender imbalance, operational ethics, and sustainability.

This exploration extends to predicting the trajectory of key music industry infrastructures and relationships. The module guides you in assessing where your own practice fits, whether as a freelancer, sole trader, partner, Limited Company, or employee, enabling you to grasp how you can positively influence the industry’s future.

Copyright, Contracts and IP (20 credits)

Understanding and applying appropriate legal frameworks protects you, the business you run and the artists you work with, but they also allow you to monetize the art.

In this module, you will recognise danger areas, analyse copyright, IP, contracts and other relevant legal structures and apply them to your related activities over the years outputs: importantly, all of your music business activities in and out of your course can be fed into your portfolio for assessment making the module centrally relevant and vocationally applicable to you as an emerging professional.

You will have the option to apply your legal skills to real life projects.

Creative Marketing (20 credits)

Whether you’re overseeing a label, independently releasing music, organising a tour, or aiming to join a music business at any scale, the synergy between music and marketing is undeniable. In this module, you will scrutinise and apply both theoretical and practical skills essential to ensure that your endeavors gain the attention they deserve. Whether delving into the psychology of customer behavior, conducting market research, or analysing data, you’ll possess the knowledge to seamlessly integrate with graphic design, photography, filming, and editing skills that you will acquire and refine.

The Content Creation Boot Camp is designed to enhance your practical asset creation skills, empowering you to craft innovative marketing content not only throughout your course but also beyond. Recognizing that you may be engaged in various music-related projects outside of the curriculum, this module allows you to seamlessly integrate your newfound knowledge into those projects and vice versa, connecting your experiences with the Creative Entrepreneurial Approaches Module.

Creative Entrepreneurial Approaches (60 credits)

This module is designed to reflect the interdisciplinary collaborative and entrepreneurial nature of music sector working practices. You will critically examine the current music sector practices most applicable to your own journey as a music industry professional, whether that’s as an employee, a business owner, or a freelancer with one or more business activities: you’ll look for your place in the sector and work towards finding a home there during your studies.

You’ll work on relevant real life projects and these will provide you with the opportunity to examine key music sectors, industry stakeholders, and critically examine the work environment to identify relevant professional opportunities to support your development to give you the best chance to thrive.

Master's Dissertation (40 credits)

Building on your experience in the Research for Creative Industries module and the subsequent proposal, you are now set to embark on your Masters Dissertation journey. This undertaking will involve an independent study focused on your chosen area of interest. Various paths are available to you, allowing you to personalize your level 7 experience. You may opt for a more traditional Desktop Study, delving into in-depth theoretical exploration, or choose a practical Project-Based approach, preparing you for a future in the industry or potential doctoral studies. The flexibility of these options ensures that your dissertation journey aligns with your individual goals and aspirations.
